In the past, people have paid crazy amounts of money for in-game items, and we’ve also seen players spend a ton of money for cosmetics and other perks that will give their characters an advantage over others in the game.
How much are people willing to pay for characters though? A recent report from the South China Morning Post has revealed that one gamer who plays MMORPG Justice Online spent $1.4 million on his character, only to have his friend accidentally sell it for $552.
$552 is still a lot of money to pay for a video game character, but it’s a far cry from how much was invested in the character, to begin with. Apparently the man had loaned his friend the character, only to have his “friend” try to sell it back to him for over $50,000.
However, in the process of trying to sell it back to him, he listed it on NetEase’s in-game marketplace for just $552. Then another player swooped in and purchased it. The man had initially filed a lawsuit against NetEase and his friend, but a judge mediating the case led it towards a settlement where his character was ultimately returned to him. Life is pretty crazy sometimes.
