Apple’s budget-friendly iPhone model continues outselling top-tier flagships, according to Counterpoint Research. Data suggests the iPhone XR has been the best-selling smartphone in the first three quarters of 2019. Now, we’ll see if the iPhone XR holds up in the final quarter despite arriving more than a year ago.
Several flagship smartphones were released before and after it, but Apple’s iPhone XR hasn’t flinched throughout 2019.
Counterpoint Research, according to 9to5Mac, estimates that the iPhone XR has been the best-selling smartphone in the first, second, and third quarters of the year. It’s also the most popular iPhone model in every region around the world.
Released more than a year ago, the iPhone XR attracted consumers with older smartphones in need of an upgrade. Apple priced this model at $749, and it still offered high-end specifications where performance matters most. Consumers jumped at the value, which set the iPhone XR on this successful path. Smartphone sales slowed down in 2018, but Apple adjusted the iPhone XR’s price at several points to maintain its momentum.
The data in Counterpoint Research’s report highlighted other companies, too. Samsung dominates in total sales, and the rankings suggest its mid-range devices are leading the pack. The Galaxy A10 and the Galaxy A50 finished right behind the iPhone XR during the third quarter. Lower prices on mid-range devices are helping Samsung stay ahead of popular Chinese competitors.
Here were the best-selling smartphones in Q3 2019, courtesy of Counterpoint Research:
- Apple iPhone XR
- Samsung Galaxy A10
- Samsung Galaxy A50
- Oppo A9
- Apple iPhone 11
- Oppo A5s
- Samsung Galaxy A20
- Oppo A5
- Xiaomi Redmi A7
- Huawei P30
Apple’s iPhone 11, which acts as the iPhone XR’s spiritual success, landed in the top ten during the same period. In fairness, the iPhone 11 was released at the very end of the third quarter. Both that model and the iPhone 11 Pro might climb up the rankings after a few more months of availability.
Even with the iPhone 11 in its lineup, the iPhone XR is still manufactured and sold globally. So it’ll be interesting to see how the iPhone XR holds up in the final quarter of 2019 and the early months of 2020. Currently, the iPhone XR can be purchased for as little as $399 with an eligible trade-in. Maybe the iPhone 11 can knock it from the top, but there’s no reason to doubt the iPhone XR’s ability remain the best-selling smartphone due to its unbeatable value.
