Over the past few years, Blizzard has introduced remasters of some of its games. There was a remaster of the original StarCraft and back in 2018, Blizzard announced Warcraft 3: Reforged which is also basically a remaster of the popular game. We have also heard rumors that a Diablo 2 remaster could be in the works too.
During an interview at ExileCon 2019, Diablo’s original creators Max and Erich Schaefer revealed that they do not think that a Diablo 2 remaster could be in development. Erich claims that this is because the hard drives containing the backup of the game’s source code and assets were lost, so remastering Diablo 2 would be difficult for Blizzard to do. Well, that is sad news.
“We lost a lot of the assets, art assets. It would make it very difficult for Blizzard to do a Diablo 2 Remaster because all the assets we used are pretty much gone. They’d have to make them from scratch.” However both the Schaefers no longer work at Blizzard so it should be noted that they don’t really know what the company is doing.
But with Diablo 4 announced, the company will probably be focusing their time and resources on that instead of remastering an older game.
